Human and Animal Studies

Research Involving Human Participants

The Journal of Basic and Applied Research in Biomedicine upholds strict ethical standards for research involving human subjects. All studies must comply with the principles outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki (1975, as revised in 2008) and be conducted in accordance with internationally recognized guidelines on human research ethics.

Authors must ensure the following:

  • Prior ethical approval must be obtained from an institutional review board (IRB), ethics committee, or an equivalent regulatory body.
  • The name of the approving body, along with the approval number and date, must be explicitly stated in the manuscript (preferably in the Methods section).

The manuscript should include the following declaration (or any relevant statement):

“All procedures involving human participants were conducted in accordance with the ethical standards of the institutional and/or national research committee and with the 1975 Helsinki Declaration, as revised in 2008.”

Additionally, authors must confirm that: “Informed consent was obtained from all individuals included in the study.”

If informed consent was not possible, a clear justification must be provided. Upon editorial request, authors are obligated to submit a copy of the ethics committee’s approval letter for verification.

Research Involving Animals

Studies involving the use of animals must comply with the National Research Council’s Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals or equivalent institutional/national guidelines governing animal welfare and ethical treatment.

Authors must: [1] Obtain prior written approval from their institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC) or equivalent body. [2] Clearly describe ethical compliance in the manuscript, including specific animal care protocols, experimental procedures, and housing conditions.

A typical statement in the Methods or Experimental section should read (or any relevant statement): “All animal experiments were performed in accordance with institutional ethical guidelines and were approved by the [Institutional Ethical Committee], approval number: [XXX], dated: [DD/MM/YYYY].”

The approval number and date must be clearly indicated. The journal reserves the right to request supporting documentation for ethical approvals during the review process.

Article Withdrawal Policy

The Journal of Basic and Applied Research in Biomedicine is committed to upholding the highest standards of academic integrity and publication ethics. To safeguard the scholarly process, we expect our authors to maintain transparency and responsibility throughout the submission and publication journey.

General Principles

Manuscript submission to the Journal of Basic and Applied Research in Biomedicine constitutes a commitment to consider the work for publication exclusively in this journal. Authors are expected to follow ethical publishing practices and ensure the accuracy, originality, and integrity of their submissions. Withdrawal requests, particularly at advanced stages of processing, can result in the unnecessary expenditure of editorial and peer-review resources and may disrupt the editorial workflow.

  • All withdrawal requests are subject to editorial approval.
  • Unjustified or unethical withdrawal may result in blacklisting the authors from future submissions.
  • No fees paid during submission, peer review, or publication are refundable under any withdrawal circumstances.
  • If approved, a processing withdrawal charge of $100 USD will apply.

Preventing Unethical Withdrawal

To minimize unwarranted withdrawal requests, authors, especially the corresponding author, are urged to ensure that the following conditions are met before submission:

  • Accuracy of Content: Confirm that all data, analyses, and interpretations presented are accurate, complete, and free from error.
  • Originality and Permissions: Ensure the manuscript represents original work and that all permissions for data, materials, or institutional resources have been properly obtained and documented. Any use of previously published material or third-party data must be properly cited.
  • Authorship Agreement: Clearly determine the list of authors, their order, and individual contributions prior to manuscript submission. All authors must have reviewed the final version and approved its submission.
  • Submission Consent: All co-authors must agree on the target journal and consent to the submission.
  • Exclusive Submission: The manuscript must not be under consideration elsewhere and should not be submitted to more than one journal at a time.
  • Awareness and Transparency: Share the final draft and details of the submission with all listed authors before sending it to the journal.

Conflicts of Interest

A conflict of interest (COI) arises when an individual’s personal, financial, or professional affiliations have the potential to compromise, or appear to compromise, their objectivity and integrity in conducting, reviewing, or publishing scientific research. Such conflicts may affect the authors, reviewers, or editors involved in the editorial process of the Journal of Basic and Applied Research in Biomedicine.

Recognizing and transparently disclosing conflicts of interest is essential for maintaining trust in the peer review system, ensuring fair editorial decisions, and preserving the credibility of the scientific record.

1. Author Conflicts of Interest

All authors are required to disclose any actual or potential conflicts of interest that may be perceived to influence their manuscript. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Financial relationships (e.g., research grants, funding sources, stock ownership, consulting fees, or honoraria)
  • Institutional affiliations that may have a vested interest in the research outcomes
  • Personal relationships or academic competition
  • Intellectual property rights (e.g., patents or patent applications related to the research)

A conflict of interest declaration must be included at the time of submission and must be stated explicitly in the manuscript (e.g., in a “Conflicts of Interest” section before the References).

Example Statement: "The authors declare no conflict of interest."
or
"Author A has received funding from [Company Name]. Author B serves as a consultant for [Organization]. These relationships had no influence on the design, execution, or interpretation of the study."

Failure to disclose a conflict may result in manuscript rejection, retraction, or other editorial actions, depending on the severity and intent.

2. Reviewer and Editor Conflicts of Interest

Reviewers and editors must recuse themselves from handling any manuscript in which they:

  • Have a personal or professional relationship with the authors
  • Have a financial or competitive interest in the subject matter
  • May be perceived to have bias that could affect their judgment

Reviewers are required to disclose any potential COIs upon invitation to review and are expected to decline the review if a conflict exists. Editors are likewise expected to delegate manuscripts to impartial colleagues when necessary.

3. Transparency for Readers

All declared conflicts of interest will be published alongside the article to ensure transparency for readers. This helps contextualize the research and allows readers to assess any potential influences on the findings.

Withdrawal Policy

Pre-Publication Withdrawal

Authors may request withdrawal of a manuscript within ten (10) days of submission. Requests must be submitted via email by the corresponding author, clearly stating the reasons for withdrawal. Withdrawal will only be approved under exceptional and unavoidable circumstances. Once peer review has commenced or the article has entered the production phase, withdrawal may be declined unless ethical or legal issues are identified.

Late-Stage Withdrawal

Requests submitted after peer review, during revision, or close to publication are generally discouraged. At this stage, considerable time and effort have been invested by editors, reviewers, and the journal team. Withdrawal at this point may be granted only for ethical violations, submission errors, or institutional mandates, and must be accompanied by detailed justification.

Post-Publication Withdrawal (Retraction)

Once an article has been published, it can only be removed in cases involving copyright violations, ethical misconduct, or legal disputes. Such cases will follow the journal’s Retraction and Correction Policy and will be conducted in accordance with COPE guidelines.

Editorial Discretion

All withdrawal requests are subject to review by the editorial board. The journal reserves the right to reject inappropriate or unjustified withdrawal requests and may take further action if unethical behavior is suspected, including informing the authors’ institutions or banning future submissions.

Retraction and Correction Policy

The Journal of Basic and Applied Research in Biomedicine is committed to maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the scholarly record. In accordance with the best practices recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), our editorial board reserves the right to retract or correct published content when necessary to preserve scientific transparency and credibility.

Grounds for Retraction

A formal retraction may be initiated following a rigorous editorial investigation under any of the following circumstances:

Serious Ethical Breaches: The manuscript is found to involve unethical publishing behavior such as duplicate submissions, fabrication or falsification of data, undisclosed conflicts of interest, inappropriate authorship claims, or plagiarism.

Critical Scientific Errors: Significant methodological flaws, miscalculations, or incorrect interpretations that fundamentally compromise the reliability of the findings and conclusions.

Invalidated Findings: The emergence of compelling new evidence that refutes the main findings of the article and was unavailable to the authors at the time of submission.

Retraction notices will be clearly linked to the original article, remain permanently accessible, and include a transparent explanation for the retraction. Authors and their affiliated institutions will be formally notified.

Note: Retaining copyright as an author does not imply the unilateral right to withdraw or retract a published article. All such actions must follow the journal's formal procedures and COPE's retraction framework.

Post-Publication Corrections

In cases where errors are identified post-publication but do not warrant full retraction, the following mechanisms will be employed:

  1. Erratum

An Erratum is issued when an error is introduced by the journal during production or editing, which may affect the article’s scientific clarity, accuracy, or the journal’s reputation. Errata are published promptly and linked to the original article.

  1. Corrigendum

A Corrigendum is a correction requested by the author(s) to address substantive errors or omissions in the original publication. These may alter the interpretation of the data or affect the reputation of the authors or the journal. All corrigenda must be approved by the editorial team and signed by all contributing authors. Further peer review may be applied at the editors’ discretion.

  1. Addendum

An Addendum is used to supplement the original article with additional data, clarification, or context that was unintentionally omitted but does not contradict the initial conclusions. Addenda are subject to editorial review and, where necessary, additional peer assessment.

If authors identify an issue in their published work and request revisions, the manuscript will undergo a secondary peer review process. This involves the Editor-in-Chief, selected Editors, and, when applicable, the original reviewer. Approved amendments will be published under the relevant correction category outlined above.
